Pupil Voice

Engaging critically with pupil voice - Children and young people as partners in school and community change

ProgrammeUniversity of Nottingham

Nottingham May 22-23 2006

Dear colleagues,

Herewith the final programme for the Pupil voice and participation conference at the School of Education in Nottingham on the 22nd/23rd May.

Download the current conference programme.

(Download a pdf version of the document).

The final programme, with room allocations etc will be available on the website (www.pupil-voice.org.uk) and in delegate packs.  If you have not registered (forms available on the website) please would you do so straight away and send to Uta.Feinstein@nottingham.ac.uk as we need to order food in advance.

The conference 'Pupil voice and participation: Pleasures, promises and pitfalls' represents a unique coming together of researchers from schools, youth organisations and universities, to share findings, perspectives and experiences. With over fifty people, young and old, involved in presenting papers, workshops and posters, it is perhaps the largest gathering of 'pupil voice'  researchers to date in the UK.  The programme is busy, but there is also some time to meet like minded people and pursue areas of mutual interest. The conference is the culmination of an ESRC seminar series and we hope that all of the presentations will also find their way into print in the near future so that they can be more widely read and discussed. To that end, it is important that presenters are given constructive feedback and that there is active participation in the final discussions about what we now 'know' about 'critically engagement with pupil voice'.

The rooms that we are using in the Dearing building all have OHPs and data projectors, but you will need to bring a lap top or CD/memory stick if your presentation requires it. We will be collecting/copying presentations and electronic versions of papers to put on the website and to inform the publication strategy. Please bring around 15 hard copies of papers/other materials as photocopying will not be available. If you have particular other requirements please let Uta know as soon as possible.

In the atrium of the Dearing building, where we will gather for registration and meals, there is display space available if you wish to bring material- there is no need to do so though!

Please note that the website www.pupil-voice.org.ukhas up to date information, including maps and accommodation possibilities. A full list of abstracts will be available only on the website, so you are asked to look at these before choosing the parallel sessions on the day.

Because of the volume and quality of submissions for the two days we have created four (parallel)  sessions in each of the one hour slots. There are generally two papers/workshops in each slot, which equates to around 25 minutes each, although some  people aim to present a shorter 'poster session'. Sessions involving young people are indicated in red. We will be calling on members of the core teams to chair the sessions and there will be a limit on places for each, depending on overall numbers.

If you are coming by car to the Jubilee campus please use the main entrance on Wollaton Road and put notes at the front of your windscreens saying 'Pupil Voice conference' 22/23 May, School of Education, giving your name and state 'delegate' or 'speaker'. (Park in the orange area or at the rear or Newark Hall, but the entrance security Gatehouse will help). There is currently no charge for the conference so you will appreciate that this is being done 'on a shoestring'!

Very much looking forward to meeting with you for what is shaping into an exciting and important event.

Best wishes
