ESRC seminar series - Engaging critically with pupil voice

The seminar series is a partnership between the Universities of Nottingham and Sussex, Manchester Metropolitan University and the Networked Learning Group, National College for School Leadership. Following a successful bid, it is funded by the ESRC and the  participating institutions. Each sends a core team  which may include delegates from elsewhere e.g. Carnegie Young People’s initiative, GTC, IOE, Creative Partnerships, Demos. The first day comprises a series of talks and workshops with invited speakers and the second, discussions and planning for outcomes.

The  aims are to bring together representatives of the range of practices and research that can be identified as ‘pupil voice’. The series is examining the body of cross disciplinary evidence from research and practice in order to meet the following objectives:

  • map the activities that are identified as ‘pupil voice’
  • delineate key advances and debates in theory, methodology and ethics
  • locate gaps in the field for further development and inquiry
  • develop an online clearinghouse with listings of projects, bibliographies and networks
  • identify key forums through which the field can continue the dialogue.

Five (two day) seminars have been held this far (see programmes);

  • Pupil Voice and the Classroom hosted at the Networked Learning Group; HQ, Cranfield
  • Children, Young People and Community Engagement held at Sussex University
  • Children and Young People's Engagement in Changing Schools at Manchester Metropolitan University
  • Pupil Voice and Participation: pleasures, promises and pitfalls at the University of Nottingham
  • Student Voice: Creating a Listening Culture at the University of Sussex

Further to the objectives above, please see publications section for a number of outcomes in terms of a range of publications, such as books, journals and websites.
