Student Voice: Creating a Listening Culture

Tuesday 3 July , 9.30-3.30
Centre for Educational Innovation, School of Education, University of Sussex
Dame Judith Professional Centre,
Portsmouth PO6 3JL

Work to develop Student Voice in schools takes many forms but at its heart is the recognition that dialogue is central to meeting the needs of students of all ages. Creating ongoing opportunities for children and young people to discuss their learning and their life at school is key to keeping them engaged and motivated. However this work is not easy and more often than not requires a significant shift in the culture of the school.

This one-day conference for education professionals (teachers, support staff, senior leaders and local authority advisers) will discuss how to make participative approaches underpin the educational experience across the key stages. It will draw on national work of inspirational practitioners and projects in a range of schools. There will be a significant contribution from Portsmouth, where the University of Sussex has been working with the Local Authority and schools to put learners at the heart of decisions which affect their lives.

The aim of this event is to share ideas and approaches to enable practitioners to take Student Voice work forward in their own schools. It is part of a two-day event which includes a Student Voice Day for Portsmouth students.

Speakers to include: Professor Michael Fielding, Institute of Education, University of London Professor Helen Gunter, University of Manchester.

Cost £45 (to include lunch and refreshments) For further information or to book a place please contact E.Dennison@sussex.ac.uk, tel. 01273 678464.
